The getline() function actually keeps a trailing ' n' which results in the portion being skipped. Getline() is intended more for processing an entire line into something else perhaps. Like a line of numbers into numbers where a ' n' might be the row delimiter. You would be better off just using the cin operator like the first poster mentioned. It's just one of those things where you're bound to stumble on at some point. The basic idea is that using cin and getline() together is usually not what the programmer wants.
